O mais fundamental do grupo de ideias cuja história vamos rever aparece primeiro em Platão; e praticamente tudo o que se segue pode, portanto, servir como uma ilustração de uma célebre observação do Prof. Whitehead, segundo a qual “a mais segura caracterização geral da tradição filosófica europeia é que ela consiste em uma série de notas de rodapé a Platão”. Mas há duas grandes correntes conflitantes em Platão e na tradição platônica. Com relação à fissura mais profunda e de maior alcance que separa sistemas filosóficos ou religiosos, ele se colocou de ambos os lados; e sua influência sobre as gerações posteriores se deu em duas direções opostas. A fissura à qual me refiro é a que existe entre o que chamarei outra-mundanidade e esta-mundanidade. Por outra-mundanidade não quero dizer uma crença em e uma preocupação da mente com uma vida futura. Preocupar-se com o que lhe acontecerá após a morte, ou deixar seu pensamento se demorar muito nas alegrias que você tem a esperança de que lhe estarão aguardando, pode obviamente ser a mais extrema forma de esta-mundanidadeNo original: otherworldliness and this-worldliness. (N. do T.); e é essencialmente assim se essa vida é concebida não como profundamente diferente em espécie desta, mas apenas como um pouco mais do mesmo gênero de coisa, um prolongamento do modo de ser que conhecemos do mundo da mudança e do sentido, e da pluralidade e da convivência social, apenas com a mera omissão das características banais ou dolorosas da existência terrestre, o aumento de seus prazeres mais refinados e a compensação de algumas das frustrações terrenas. As duas mais conhecidas expressões de poetas vitorianos acerca do desejo de uma continuação da existência pessoal ilustram perfeitamente essa ideia. Em nada esteve mais manifesto o vivo entusiasmo de Robert Browning pela vida que agora existe do que em sua esperança de “lutar sem cessar, viajar sempre, lá como aqui”No original: "Fight on. fare ever. there as here". (N. do T.). E quando Tennyson concluiu sua meditatio mortis com uma oração simplesmente para “as recompensas de seguir adiante, e não morrer”No original: “The wages of going on, and not to die" (N. do T.), também ele estava declarando, em seu modo menos vigoroso, o valor suficiente das condições gerais de existência com a qual a experiência comum já nos familiarizou. Ambos os escritores estavam, de fato, dando expressão a uma forma especial desse sentimento que já teve alguma coisa de excepcional antes do período romântico — embora nosso presente exame histórico vá nos mostrar que seu surgimento é ainda anterior — e que era bastante característico de sua própria época — uma identificação do mais importante valor da existência com o processo e a luta no tempo, uma antipatia pela satisfação e pela finalidade e um senso da “glória do imperfeito”, para usar a expressão do Prof. Palmer. Esta é a completa negação da outra-mundanidade da qual estou falando. Pois, mesmo em suas manifestações mais moderadas, um contemptus mundi mais ou menos abrangente tem sido a essência disso; não foi necessária — embora na maioria de suas fases ocidentais tenha sido real — uma conexão com o anseio por uma imortalidade pessoal separada; e em sua forma mais consumada, encontrou-se nesse desejo o último inimigo a ser sobrepujado, a raiz de toda a miséria e vaidade da existência.

Portanto, por “outra-mundanidade” — no sentido em que o termo, como sugiro, é um termo indispensável para a distinção da antítese primária nas tendências filosóficas ou religiosas — quero indicar a crença de que tanto o genuinamente “real” quanto o verdadeiramente bom são radicalmente antitéticos em suas características essenciais a qualquer coisa que possa ser encontrada na vida natural do homem, no curso comum da experiência humana, conquanto normal, inteligente e afortunada. O mundo que conhecemos aqui e agora — variegado, mutável, um fluxo perpétuo de estados e relações de coisas ou uma fantasmagoria de pensamentos e sensações sempre inconstante, cada qual passando à não-existência no momento mesmo de seu nascimento — parece não ter em si substância para a mente outra-mundana; os objetos dos sentidos e mesmo os do conhecimento científico empírico são instáveis, contingentes, sempre se decompõem logicamente em meras relações com outras coisas que, quando perscrutadas, se mostram igualmente relativas e indefinidas. A muitos filósofos de muitas raças e idades, nossos julgamentos sobre esses objetos pareceram nos levar inevitavelmente a meros lamaçais de confusão e contradição. E — o tema é dos mais triviais — as alegrias da vida natural são evanescentes e ilusórias, como se descobre com a idade, se não ainda jovem. Mas a vontade humana, conforme concebida pelos filósofos outro-mundanos, não somente busca, mas também é capaz de encontrar algum bem final, fixo, imutável, intrínseco e perfeitamente satisfatório, assim como a razão humana busca e pode encontrar algum objeto ou objetos de contemplação que sejam estáveis, definitivos, coerentes, autônomos e inteligíveis. No entanto, nenhum deles pode tampouco ser encontrado neste mundo, mas apenas em um “mais alto” reino do ser diferente em sua natureza essencial, e não meramente em grau ou detalhes, do mais baixo. Esse outro reino, embora para aqueles enredados na matéria, ocupados com as coisas do sentido, empenhados em planos de ação ou absorvidos em afecções pessoais pareça frio, tênue e estéril de interesses e delícias, é, para os que se emanciparam por meio da reflexão ou da desilusão emocional, o objetivo final da busca filosófica e a única região na qual ou o intelecto ou o coração do homem, após cessar, mesmo nesta vida presente, de perseguir sombras, pode encontrar repouso.

The most fundamental of the group of ideas of which we are to review the history appears first in Plato; and nearly all that follows might therefore serve as an illustration of a celebrated remark of Professor Whitehead’s, that “the safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists in a series of footnotes to Plato.” But there are two conflicting major strains in Plato and in the Platonic tradition. With respect to the deepest and farthest-reaching cleavage separating philosophical or religious systems he stood on both sides; and his influence upon later generations worked in two opposite directions. The cleavage to which I refer is that between what I shall call otherworldliness and this-worldliness. By otherworldliness I do not mean a belief in and a preoccupation of the mind with a future life. To be concerned about what will happen to you after death, or to let your thought dwell much upon the joys which you hope will then await you, may obviously be the most extreme form of this-worldliness; and it is essentially such if that life is conceived, not as profoundly different in kind from this, but only as more of much the same sort of thing, a prolongation of the mode of being which we know in the world of change and sense and plurality and social fellowship, with merely the omission of the trivial or painful features of terrestrial existence, the heightening of its finer pleasures, the compensation of some of earth’s frustrations. The two most familiar expressions by Victorian poets of the desire for a continuance of personal existence perfectly illustrate this. In nothing was Robert Browning’s breezy gusto for the life that now is more manifest than in his hope to “fight on, fare ever, there as here.” And when Tennyson’s meditatio mortis ended with a prayer simply for “the wages of going on, and not to die” he, too, in his less robustious way,  was declaring the sufficient worth of the general conditions of existence with which common experience has already acquainted us. Both writers were, indeed, giving utterance to a special form of this feeling which had been somewhat exceptional before the Romantic period — though our present historical survey will show us its earlier emergence — and was highly characteristic of their own age — an identification of the chief value of existence with process and struggle in time, an antipathy to satisfaction and finality, a sense of the “glory of the imperfect,” in Professor Palmer’s phrase. This is the complete negation of the otherworldliness of which I am speaking. For of that, even in its milder manifestations, a more or less sweeping contemptus mundi has been of the essence; it has had no necessary — though in most of its Occidental phases it has had an actual — connection with the craving for a separate personal immortality; and in its more thorough-going forms it has seen in that craving the last enemy to be overcome, the root of all the misery and vanity of existence.

By ‘otherworldliness,’ then — in the sense in which the term, I suggest, is an indispensable one for distinguishing the primary antithesis in philosophical or religious tendencies — I mean the belief that both the genuinely ‘real’ and the truly good are radically antithetic in their essential characteristics to anything to be found in man’s natural life, in the ordinary course of human experience, however normal, howe'ver intelligent, and however fortunate. The world we now and here know — various, mutable, a perpetual flux of states and relations of things, or an ever-shifting phantasmagoria of thoughts and sensations, each of them lapsing into nonentity in the very moment of its birth — seems to the otherworldly mind to have no substance in it; the objects of sense and even of empirical scientific knowledge are unstable, contingent, forever breaking down logically into mere relations to other things which when scrutinized prove equally relative and elusive. Our judgments concerning them have seemed to many philosophers of many races and ages to lead us inevitably into mere quagmires of confusion and contradiction. And — the theme is of the tritest — the joys of the natural life are evanescent and delusive, as age if not youth discovers. But the human will, as  conceived by the otherworldly philosophers, not only seeks but is capable of finding some final, fixed, immutable, intrinsic, perfectly satisfying good, as the human reason seeks, and can find, some stable, definitive, coherent, self-contained, and self-explanatory object or objects of contemplation. Not, however, in this world is either to be found, but only in a ‘higher’ realm of being differing in its essential nature, and not merely in degree and detail, from the lower. That other realm, though to those enmeshed in matter, occupied with things of sense, busy with plans of action, or absorbed in personal affections, it appears cold and tenuous and barren of interest and delight, is, to those who have been emancipated through reflection or emotional disillusionment, the final goal of the philosophic quest and the sole region in which either the intellect or the heart of man, ceasing, even in this present life, to pursue shadows, can find rest.
