1. Ideia é o objeto do pensamento. Todo homem tem consciência de que pensa, e que quando está pensando sua mente se ocupa de ideias. Por conseguinte, é indubitável que as mentes humanas têm várias ideias, expressas, entre outros, pelos termos brancura, dureza, doçura, pensamento, movimento, homem, elefante, exército, embriaguez. Disso decorre a primeira questão a ser investigada: como elas são apreendidas?

Consiste numa doutrina aceita que o ser primordial dos homens tem ideias inatas e caracteres originais estampados em sua mente. Já examinei, em linhas gerais, essa opinião, e suponho que o que ficou dito no livro anterior será facilmente admitido quando tiver mostrado como o entendimento obtém todas as suas ideias, e por quais meios e graus elas podem penetrar na mente; com este fim solicitarei a cada um recorrer à sua própria observação e experiência.

2. Todas as ideias derivam da sensação ou reflexão. Suponhamos, pois, que a mente é, como dissemos, um papel em branco, desprovida de todos os caracteres, sem nenhuma ideia; como ela será suprida? De onde lhe provém este vasto estoque, que a ativa e ilimitada fantasia do homem pintou nela com uma variedade quase infinita? De onde apreende todos os materiais da razão e do conhecimento? A isso respondo, numa palavra: da experiência. Todo o nosso conhecimento está nela fundado, e dela deriva fundamentalmente o próprio conhecimento. Empregada tanto nos objetos sensíveis externos como nas operações internas de nossas mentes, que são por nós mesmos percebidas e refletidas, nossa observação supre nossos entendimentos com todos os materiais do pensamento. Dessas duas fontes de conhecimento jorram todas as nossas ideias, ou as que possivelmente teremos.

3. O objeto da sensação é uma fonte das ideias. Primeiro, nossos  sentidos, familiarizados com os objetos sensíveis particulares, levam para a mente várias e distintas percepções das coisas, segundo os vários meios pelos quais aqueles objetos os impressionaram. Recebemos, assim, as ideias de amarelo, branco, quente, frio, mole, duro, amargo, doce e todas as ideias que denominamos de qualidades sensíveis. Quando digo que os sentidos levam para a mente, entendo com isso que eles retiram dos objetos externos para a mente o que lhes produziu estas percepções. A esta grande fonte da maioria de nossas ideias, bastante dependente de nossos sentidos, dos quais se encaminham para o entendimento, denomino sensação.

4. As operações de nossas mentes consistem na outra fonte de ideias. Segundo, a outra fonte pela qual a experiência supre o entendimento com ideias é a percepção das operações de nossa própria mente, que se ocupa das ideias que já lhe pertencem. Tais operações, quando a alma começa a refletir e a considerar, suprem o entendimento com outra série de ideias que não poderia ser obtida das coisas externas, tais como a percepção, o pensamento, o duvidar, o crer, o raciocinar, o conhecer, o querer e todos os diferentes atos de nossas próprias mentes. Tendo disso consciência, observando esses atos em nós mesmos, nós os incorporamos em nossos entendimentos como ideias distintas, do mesmo modo que fazemos com os corpos que impressionam nossos sentidos. Toda gente tem esta fonte de ideias completamente em si mesma; e, embora não a tenha sentido como relacionada com os objetos externos, provavelmente ela está e deve propriamente ser chamada de sentido interno. Mas, como denomino a outra de sensação, denomino esta de reflexão: ideias que se dão ao luxo de serem tais apenas quando a mente reflete acerca de suas próprias operações. Na parte seguinte deste discurso, quero que se entenda que a reflexão significa a mente observando suas próprias operações, como elas se formam, e como elas se tornam as ideias dessas operações no entendimento. Afirmo que estas duas, a saber, as coisas materiais externas, como objeto da sensação, e as operações de nossas próprias mentes, como objeto da reflexão, são, a meu ver, os únicos dados originais dos quais as ideias derivam. O termo operações é usado aqui em sentido lato, compreendendo não apenas as ações da mente sobre suas ideias, mas também certos tipos de paixões que às vezes nascem delas, tais como a satisfação ou inquietude que nascem de qualquer pensamento.

5. Todas as nossas ideias derivam de uma ou de outra fonte. Parece-me que o entendimento não tem o menor vislumbre de uma ideia se não a receber de uma das duas fontes. Os objetos externos suprem a mente com as ideias das qualidades sensíveis, que são todas as diferentes percepções produzidas em nós, e a mente supre o entendimento com ideias através de suas próprias operações.

Quando efetuarmos uma investigação completa de ambos, de seus vários modos, combinações e relações, descobriremos que eles contêm todo o nosso estoque de ideias, e que não temos nada em nossas mentes a não ser o derivado de um desses dois meios. Se alguém examinar seus próprios pensamentos, dir-me-á, então, se todas as ideias originais que lá estão são algo mais do que os objetos de seus sentidos, ou das operações de sua mente encarada como objeto de sua reflexão; e, por mais ampla que seja a massa de conhecimentos lá localizada, por mais que ele imagine, verá, assumindo um ponto de vista estrito, que não tem ideia alguma em sua mente, a não ser o que foi por uma dessas duas impresso, embora talvez compostas em infinita variedade e ampliadas pelo entendimento, como veremos adiante.

6. Observável nas crianças. Quem considerar com atenção a situação de uma criança quando vem ao mundo quase não terá razão para supor que ela se encontra com uma abundância de ideias que constituirão o material de seu futuro conhecimeno. Gradualmente, será delas provida; embora as ideias das qualidades óbvias e familiares se imprimam antes de a memória começar a fazer um registro do tempo e da ordem, será, fiequentemente, bem mais tarde que certas qualidades incomuns surgem no caminho das crianças, e poucos homens não se lembram de quando se familiarizaram com elas; e, se fosse proveitoso, não há dúvida que uma criança seria de tal modo ordenada para ter apenas algumas das ideias ordinárias até desenvolver-se num homem. Mas, como todos os seres viventes se encontram envoltos por corpos que perpétua e diversamente os impressionam, surge uma variedade de ideias, levadas ou não em consideração, que se imprimem nas mentes das crianças. Luz e cores estão à disposição em toda parte em que o olho estiver apenas aberto; sons e certas qualidades sensíveis não se omitem de procurar seus próprios sentidos, forçando sua entrada na mente; mesmo assim, penso ser facilmente admitido que, se uma criança fosse mantida num lugar em que apenas visse o branco e o preto até a idade adulta, não teria ideia do vermelho ou do verde, do mesmo modo que quem jamais experimentou o gosto da ostra ou do abacaxi não teria esses gostos determinados.

7. Os homens estão diversamente supridos dessas ideias, segundo os diferentes objetos com os quais entram em contato. Os homens são, portanto, supridos com menos ou mais ideias simples do exterior, à medida que os objetos com os quais entram em contato oferecem maior ou menor variedade; estão supridos com as operações internas de suas mentes, à medida que refletem mais ou menos sobre elas; portanto, a menos que dirijam seus pensamentos para esta via e a considerem atentamente, não terão mais ideias claras e distintas de todas as operações de sua mente, e em tudo que puder ser observado acerca desse assunto, quer tenham  todas as ideias particulares de qualquer paisagem, quer das partes dos movimentos de um relógio, deverão encarar e prestar atenção a todos os seus pormenores. A pintura ou o relógio podem estar de tal modo situados que diariamente surgem no caminho de um homem; mesmo assim, ele terá uma ideia confusa de todas as partes de que são feitos enquanto não se aplicar com atenção e considerar cada uma delas pormenorizadamente.

8. As ideias de reflexão são posteriores, porque necessitam de atenção. Vemos, assim, a razão pela qual bem mais tarde a maioria das crianças adquire ideias das operações de suas próprias mentes. E algumas não têm ideias claras ou perfeitas da maioria de suas operações durante toda a vida. Embora tenham a mente continuamente atingida por visões flutuantes, estas não a impressionam suficiente e profundamente, marcando-a com ideias claras, distintas e duráveis, enquanto o entendimento não se volta para si mesmo e reflete sobre suas próprias operações, tomando-as o objeto de sua própria contemplação. Quando as crianças chegam ao mundo pela primeira vez, encontram-se rodeadas pior uma infinidade de coisas novas, que, por constante solicitação de seus sentidos, orientam a mente constantemente para elas, avançando para observar de novo, e se deliciando com a variedade cambiante de objetos. São, assim, os primeiros anos usualmente empregados e entretidos em olhar para fora. A tarefa dos homens consiste em se familiarizarem com o que existe para ser encontrado extemamente; e assim, crescendo com atenção constante para as sensações externas, raramente os homens fazem alguma reflexão considerável sobre o que ocorre com eles, até atingirem a idade adulta; e alguns jamais fazem tal reflexão.

9. A alma começa a ter ideias quando começa a perceber. Perguntar quando um homem começa a ter quaisquer ideias equivale a perguntar quando começa a pierceber, pois dá no mesmo dizer ter ideias ou ter percepção. Sei que alguns são de opinião que a alma sempre pensa, e, contanto que exista, tem constante e por si mesma percepção real das ideias, e que o pensamento real é inseparável da alma, como o é a extensão real do corpo. Sendo tudo isso verdadeiro, inquirir acerca da origem das ideias dos homens equivale a inquirir acerca da origem de sua alma. Com base nisso, a alma e suas ideias, como o corpo e sua extensão, começarão ambos a existir ao mesmo tempo.

10. A alma nem sempre pensa, pois isto necessita de provas. Supor-se, porém, que a alma antecede, coexiste ou aparece certo tempo depois dos primeiros rudimentos ou do começo da vida no corpo é tema para ser discutido por quem for mais bem-dotado. Confesso que possuo uma dessas almas apáticas, que nem sempre têm percepção de si mesmas ao  contemplar ideias, nem posso conceber nada mais necessário à alma do que sempre pensar, ao corpo de estar sempre em movimento, e imagino que a percepção das ideias é para a alma o que o movimento é para o corpo, isto é, não é sua essência, mas uma de suas operações. Portanto, embora o pensamento jamais possa ser a tal ponto suposto como ação apropriada da alma, ainda assim não é necessário supor que ela estaria sempre pensando, sempre em ação. É este, talvez, o privilégio do infinito Autor e Protetor de todas as coisas, “que nunca repousa e nem dorme”, o que não é admissível para nenhum ser finito; pelo menos não o é para a alma do homem. Sabemos, certamente por experiência, que às vezes pensamos; daí chegamos a esta conclusão infalível: há alguma coisa em nós que tem o poder de pensar. Mas de que esta substância esteja perpetuamente pensando, ou não, não podemos ter mais segurança do que nos informa a experiência. Afirmar que o pensamento real é essencial à alma e inseparável dela é uma petição de princípio e não uma prova racional, sendo necessário apresentá-la, por não se tratar de uma proposição evidente por si mesma. Mas insistir que esta proposição — “a alma sempre pensa” — é evidente por si mesma, com a qual todos concordam apenas através de uma primeira inquirição, leva-me a pedir auxílio a todos os homens. Quando digo que tenho dúvidas se pensei ou não durante toda a noite, isto implica que se trata de uma questão sobre um fato e que não se pode aceitar, para prová-la, uma hipótese consistindo na própria coisa em questão, da qual não se pode chegar a nenhuma prova. Seria, pois, o mesmo que supor que todos os relógios pensam, desde que seus ponteiros se movimentam, ficando disso, portanto, provado, sem qualquer dúvida, que meu relógio pensou durante toda a noite passada. Quem não quiser se equivocar, deve construir sua hipótese, derivada da experiência sensível, sobre um fato, e não supor um fato devido a essa hipótese, isto é, porque supõe ser assim, o que como prova equivale a isto; devo necessariamente ter pensado durante toda a noite passada, porque alguém supõe que sempre penso, embora eu mesmo nem sempre o perceba.

Entretanto, os homens enamorados de suas próprias opiniões podem não só supor o que está em questão, como recorrer ao fato errôneo. De que outro modo poderia alguém tirar de minha inferência que uma coisa não é porque não a sentimos no sono? Não digo que não existe alma no homem porque não a sente no sono, mas digo: não pode pensar um momento sequer, acordado ou dormindo, sem ser sensível a isso. Sermos sensíveis a isso não é uma coisa necessária para todas as coisas; é, contudo, para os nossos pensamentos, sendo para eles agora e sempre necessário, até que possamos pensar sem termos disso consciência.

11. Nem sempre tem consciência disso. Concordo que a alma de um homem desperto jamais está vazia de pensamento, porque esta é a  condição de estar acordado. Deve, porém, o homem desperto considerar se dormir sem sonhar afeta ou não o homem em sua totalidade, tanto na mente como no corpo. Pois é muito difícil imaginar que alguma coisa possa pensar e não estar consciente disso. Se a mente de um homem que dorme pensa sem ter consciência disso, pergunto: sentiu no pensamento algum prazer ou dor, ou foi capaz de ter felicidade ou infortúnio? Estou seguro de que o homem não sentiu nada mais do que a cama ou a terra em que se encontra. Ser feliz ou miserável sem ter consciência disso pa-rece-me totalmente inconsciente e impossível. Quando o corpo dorme é impossível que a alma tenha pensamento, alegria e preocupações, prazer e sofrimento, embora o homem não seja nem consciente e nem participe disso. Certamente, Sócrates dormindo e Sócrates acordado não é a mesma pessoa, pois sua alma quando dorme, e Sócrates o homem, consistindo de corpo e alma, quando está acordado, são duas pessoas. Portanto, Sócrates, acordando, não tem conhecimento da felicidade ou relação como o infortúnio de sua alma, sentido por ele só quando dormia. Sem, contudo, percebê-los, assemelha-se à sua falta de sentimento pela felicidade ou infortúnio pelo homem das Índias, simplesmente porque não o conhece. Se for excluída totalmente a consciência de nossas ações ou sensações, especialmente as do prazer e sofrimento, juntamente com os problemas que acompanham, será difícil caracterizar a identidade pessoal.

1. IDEA is the object of thinking.—Every man being conscious to himself that he thinks, and that which his mind is applied about whilst thinking, being the ideas that are there, it is past doubt, that men have in their mind several ideas, such as are those expressed by the words, whiteness, hardness, sweetness, thinking, motion, man, elephant, army, drunkenness, and others: it is in the first place then to be inquired, how he comes by them? I know it is a received doctrine, that men have native ideas, and original characters, stamped upon their minds in their very first being. This opinion I have at large examined already; and, I suppose, what I have said in the foregoing book, will be much more easily admitted, when I have shown whence the understanding may get all the ideas it has, and by what ways and degrees they may come into the mind, for which I shall appeal to every one's own observation and experience.

2. All ideas come from sensation or reflection.—Let us then suppose the mind to be, as we say white paper, void of all characters, without any ideas; how comes it to be furnished? Whence comes it by that vast store which the busy and boundless fancy of man has painted on it, with an almost endless variety? Whence has it all the materials of reason and knowledge? To this I answer in one word, from experience; in that all our knowledge is founded; and from that it ultimately derives itself. Our observation employed either about external sensible objects, or about the internal operations of our minds, perceived and reflected on by ourselves, is that which supplies our understandings with all the materials of thinking. These two are the fountains of knowledge, from whence all the ideas we have, or can naturally have, do spring.

3. The objects of sensation one source of ideas.—First, Our Senses, conversant about particular sensible objects, do convey into the mind several distinct perceptions of things, according to those various ways wherein those objects do affect them: and thus we come by those ideas we have, of yellow, white, heat, cold, soft, hard, bitter, sweet, and all those which we call sensible qualities, which, when I say, the senses convey into the mind, I mean, they, from external objects, convey into the mind what produces there those perceptions. This great source of most of the ideas we have, depending wholly upon our senses, and derived by them to the understanding, I call sensation.

4. The operations of our minds the other source of them.— Secondly, The other fountain, from which experience furnisheth the understanding with ideas, is the perception of the operations of our own mind within us.. as it is employed about the ideas it has got; which operations, when the soul comes to reflect on, and consider, do furnish the understanding with another set of ideas, which could not be had from things without; and such are, perception, thinking, doubting, believing, reasoning, knowing, willing, and all the different actings of our own minds; which we being conscious of, and observing in ourselves, do from these receive into our understandings as distinct ideas, as we do from bodies affecting our senses. This source of ideas, every man has wholly in himself; and though it be not sense, as having nothing to do with external objects, yet it is very like it, and might properly enough be called internal sense. But as I call the other sensation, so I call this reflection, the ideas it affords being such only, as the mind gets by reflecting on its own operations, within itself. By reflection, then, in the following part of this discourse, I would be understood to mean that notice which the mind takes of its own operations, and the manner of them, by reason whereof, there come to be ideas of these operations in the understanding. These two, I say, viz. external material things, as the objects of sensation, and the operations of our minds within, as the objects of reflection, are to me the only originals from whence all our ideas take their beginnings. The term operations here I use in a large sense, as comprehending not barely the actions of the mind about its ideas, but some sort of passions arising sometimes from them, such as is the satisfaction or uneasiness arising from any thought.

5. All our ideas are of the one or the other of these.—The understanding seems to me not to have the least glimmering of any ideas which it doth not receive from one of these two. External objects furnish the mind with the ideas of sensible qualities, which are all those different perceptions they produce in us: and the mind furnishes the understanding with ideas of its own operations.

These, when we have taken a full survey of them and their several modes, combinations, and relations, we shall find to contain all our whole stock of ideas; and that we have nothing in our minds which did not come in one of these two ways. Let any one examine his own thoughts, and thoroughly search into his understanding, and then let him tell me, whether all the original ideas he has there, are any other than of the objects of his senses, or of the operations of his mind, considered as objects of his reflection; and how great a mass of knowledge soever he imagines to be lodged there, he will, upon taking a strict view, see that he has not any idea in his mind, but what one of these two have imprinted; though, perhaps, with infinite variety compounded and enlarged by the understanding, as we shall see hereafter.

6. Observable in children.—He that attentively considers the state of a child at his first coming into the world, will have little reason to think him stored with plenty of ideas, that are to be the matter of his future knowledge. It is by degrees he comes to be furnished with them : and though the ideas of obvious and familiar qualities imprint themselves before the memory begins to keep a register of time or order, yet it is often so late before some unusual qualities come in the way, that there are few men that cannot recollect the beginning of their acquaintance with them; and if it were worth while, no doubt a child might be so ordered, as to have but a very few, even of the ordinary ideas, till he were grown up to a man. But all that are born into the world, being surrounded with bodies that perpetually and diversely affect them; variety of ideas, whether care be taken of it or no, are imprinted on the minds of children. Light and colours are busy at hand every where, when the eye is but open; sounds, and some tangible qualities, fail not to solicit their proper senses, and force an entrance to the mind; but yet, I think, it will be granted easily, that if a child were kept in a place where he never saw any other but black and white, till he were a man, he would have no more ideas of scarlet or green, than he that from his childhood never tasted an oyster, or a pineapple, has of those particular relishes.

7. Men are differently furnished with these, according to the different objects they converse with.—Men then come to be furnished with fewer or more simple ideas from without, according as the objects they converse with afford greater or less variety; and from the operations of their minds within, according as they more or less reflect on them. For though he that contemplates the operations of his mind, cannot but have plain and clear ideas of them; yet, unless he turns his thoughts that way, and considers them attentively, he will no more have clear and distinct ideas of all the operations of his mind, and all that may be observed therein, than he will have all the particular ideas of any landscape, or of the parts and motions of a clock, who will not turn his eyes to it, and with attention heed all the parts of it. The picture, or clock, may be so placed, that they may come in his way every day; but yet he will have but a confused idea of all the parts they are made up of, till he applies himself with attention, to consider them each in particular.

8. Ideas of reflection later, because they need attention.—And hence we see the reason, why it is pretty late before most children get ideas of the operations of their own minds ; and some have not any very clear or perfect ideas of the greatest part of them all their lives. Because, though they pass there continually, yet, like floating visions, they make not deep impressions enough to leave in the mind clear, distinct, lasting ideas, till the understanding turns inward upon itself, reflects on its own operations, and makes them the objects of its own contemplation. Children, when they come first into it, are surrounded with a world of new things, which, by a constant solicitation of their senses, draw the mind constantly to them, forward to take notice of new, and apt to be delighted with the variety of changing objects. Thus the first years are usually employed and diverted in looking abroad. Men's business in them is to acquaint themselves with what is to be found without; and so growing up in a constant attention to outward sensation, seldom make any considerable reflection on what passes within them, till they come to be of riper years; and some scarce ever at all.

9. The soul begins to have ideas, when it begins to perceive.— To ask at what time a man has first any ideas? is to ask when he begins to perceive? having ideas, and perception, being the same thing. I know it is an opinion, that the soul always thinks, and that it has the actual perception of ideas, in itself constantly, as long as it exists ; and that actual thinking is as inseparable from the soul, as actual extension is from the body; which, if true, to inquire after the beginning of a man's ideas, is the same, as to inquire after the beginning of his soul. For, by this account, soul and its ideas, as body and its extension, will begin to exist both at the same time.

10. The soul thinks not always; but this wants proofs.—But whether the soul be supposed to exist antecedent to, or coeval with, or some time after, the first rudiments of organization, or the beginnings of life in the body, I leave to be disputed by those who have better thought of that matter. I confess myself to have one of those dull souls, that doth not perceive itself always to contemplate ideas, nor can conceive it any more necessary for the soul always to think, than for the body always to move; the perception of ideas being (as I conceive) to the soul, what motion is to the body, not its essence, but one of its operations; and, therefore, though thinking be supposed ever so much the proper action of the soul, yet it is not necessary to suppose, that it should be always thinking, always in action. That, perhaps, is the privilege of the infinite Author and Preserver of things, who never slumbers nor sleeps; but is not competent to any finite being, at least not to the soul of man. We know certainly, by experience, that we sometimes think, and thence draw this infallible consequence, that there is something in us that has a power to think; but whether that substance perpetually thinks or no, we can be no farther assured, than experience informs us. For to say, that actual thinking is essential to the soul, and inseparable from it, is to beg what is in question, and not to prove it by reason; which is necessary to be done, if it be not a self-evident proposition. But whether this, " that the soul always thinks," be a self-evident proposition, that every body assents to at first hearing, I appeal to mankind. It is doubted whether I thought at all last night, or no; the question being about a matter of fact, it is begging it to bring, as a proof for it, an hypothesis, which is the very thing in dispute; by which way one may prove any thing, and it is but supposing that all watches, whilst the balance beats, think, and it is sufficiently proved, and past doubt, that my watch thought all last night. But he that would not deceive himself, ought to build his hypothesis on matter of fact, and make it out by sensible experience, and not presume on matter of fact, because of his hypothesis, that is, because he supposes it to be so; which way of proving amounts to this, that I must necessarily think all last night, because another supposes I always think, though I myself cannot perceive that I always do so.

But men in love with their opinions, may not only suppose what is in question, but allege wrong matter of fact. How else could any one make it an inference of mine, " that a thing is not, because we are not sensible of it in our sleep?" I did not say there is no soul in a man, because he is not sensible of it in his sleep; but I do say, he cannot think at any time, waking or sleeping, without being sensible of it. Our being sensible of it, is not necessary to any thing, but to our thoughts; and to them it is, and to them it will always be necessary, till we can think without being conscious of it.

11. It is not always conscious of it.—I grant that the soul in a waking man is never without thought, because it is the condition of being awake: but whether sleeping, without dreaming, be not an affection of the whole man, mind as well as body, may be worth a waking man's consideration; it being hard to conceive that any thing should think, and not be conscious of it. If the soul doth think in a sleeping man, without being conscious of it, I ask, whether, during such thinking, it has any pleasure or pain, or be capable of happiness or misery? I am sure the man is not, any more than the bed or earth he lies on. For to be happy or miserable, without being conscious of it, seems to me utterly inconsistent and impossible; or if it be possible that the soul can, whilst the body is sleeping, have its thinking, enjoyments, and concerns, its pleasure or pain apart, which the man is not conscious of, nor partakes in. It is certain, that Socrates asleep, and Socrates awake, is not the same person: but his soul when he sleeps, and Socrates the man, consisting of body and soul when he is waking, are two persons; since waking, Socrates has no knowledge of, or concernment for that happiness or misery of his soul, which it enjoys alone by itself, whilst he sleeps, without perceiving any thing of it, any more than he has for the happiness or misery of a man in the Indies, whom he knows not. For if we take wholly away all consciousness of our actions and sensations, especially of pleasure and pain, and the concernment that accompanies it, it will be hard to know wherein to place personal identity.
