Ethos, a palavra grega, da qual deriva a expressão "ética", é muito difícil de traduzir. Em geral, é vertida corretamente como "natureza" - refere-se à maneira como és, à maneira como és feito. O conceito mais recente de 'caráter' se aproxima muito, e o provérbio grego δαίμων - o ethos é o daemon, ou podemos chamá-lo de destino, do homem - aponta na mesma direção. Em outras palavras, reduzir o problema da moralidade à ética é realizar uma espécie de truque de conjuração por meio do qual o problema decisivo da filosofia moral, a saber, a relação do indivíduo com o geral, desaparece. O que está implícito em tudo isso é a ideia de que se eu viver de acordo com meu próprio ethos, minha própria natureza ou se, para usar a frase fina de nosso tempo, eu realizar mim mesmo, então isso será suficiente para provocar a boa vida. E isso não passa de pura ilusão e ideologia. Além disto, uma ideologia que anda de mãos dadas com uma segunda ideologia, a saber, a ilusão de que cultura e a adaptação do indivíduo à cultura provocam o refinamento e cultivação de si mesmo do indivíduo, quando todavia a cultura se opõe à filosofia moral e é realmente aberta ao criticismo desde este quadrante. Por todas estas razões, acredito que é melhor reter o conceito de moralidade, embora criticamente, do que suavizar e obscurecer sua natureza problemática de partida, substituindo-o pelo conceito sentimental de ética.

Ethos, the Greek word , from which the expression ‘ethics’ is derived, is very difficult to translate. In general it is rightly rendered as ‘nature’ – it refers to the way you are, the way you are made. The more recent concept of ‘character’ comes very close to that of , and the Greek proverb δαίμων – the ethos is the daemon, or we might call it the destiny, of man – points in the same direction. In other words, to reduce the problem of morality to ethics is to perform a sort of conjuring trick by means of which the decisive problem of moral philosophy, namely the relation of the individual to the general, is made to disappear. What is implied in all this is the idea that if I live in accordance with my own ethos, my own nature, or if, to use the fine phrase of our own time, I realize myself, then this will be enough to bring about the good life. And this is nothing but pure illusion and ideology. An ideology, moreover, that goes hand in hand with a second ideology, namely the illusion that culture and the adaptation of the individual to culture brings about the refinement and self-cultivation of the individual, whereas culture stands opposed to moral philosophy and is actually open to criticism from that quarter. For all these reasons I believe it is better to retain the concept of morality, albeit critically, than to soften up and obscure its problematic nature from the outset by replacing it with the sentimental concept of ethics.
